The Daily Generation Lingo
Remember how our parents use to wonder what we’re talking about when we use terms like “Cool”, “Stay Connected”, “[insert noun] rules!”, “[insert noun] rocks!” or “Toss my Salad”? :P
Well, it seems that as we progress into the future, newer lingos/slangs approach and suddenly we find ourselves scratching our heads wondering what it meant. It is also a sign of aging, ladies and gents but worry not, learning a new generation lingo is easy as long as you mingle with the young ‘uns.
In Japan, the new lingo phenomenon is no exception. Teens are coming up with new words faster than the Japanese bullet trains. Even the authorities are having a tough time understanding their speech. It’s almost like a secret code altogether.
I found some of these lingos here, check them out:
An-pan—Not a roll filled with sweet bean jam, but an am-pm convenience store outlet.
Daa—Short for “darling.”
Getoru—To obtain something. Combining “get” and toru (to take).
Haafu—From the English “half.” Means to stay out half the night, until 3am…
Keiban—A cell phone number. Shortened from keitai bango.
M4—Not a magnitude 4 earthquake but an appointment to meet someone at 4pm at McDonald’s.
Maha-go!—A command to get lost, beat it, scram. Composed from maha (mach, the speed of sound) and “go.”
Marumera—Marlboro Menthol Lights
Oniden—Literally, “demon-electricity,” and meaning to telephone a person persistently.
Peki-peki—Short for kanpeki, or perfect.
Rochuu—Short for “rojo de chuu,” to kiss on a public street.
Yababa—Combined from yabai (dangerous) and obasan (aunt), meaning an older woman capable of making trouble.
Yakui—A hood, someone resembling a yakuza.
Yarahata—A girl who reaches the age of twenty and is still a virgin. The word is formed by combining yaranai (to not do it) and hatachi (age twenty)…
I was really tickled at some like for example M4 meant meeting at McDonalds at 4pm..ahhaa…interesting stuff.

So, I’m gonna leave this post as it is for now because I am meeting a friend at M6 who is an Oniden and we’re probably going to stay until Haafu since my Yaababa is not around, while we paint the town red :P
