What festival is this dance related to?

During summers in Japan, a line of firework displays are scheduled weekly for the public eye in Tokyo. And usually these fireworks are a wrap up to festivals during the summer so here is a list of events to check out and mark on your calendar if you want to catch these work of art in the sky.

You better understand Japanese to listen to this. Miss Universe organizers are too cheap to have her translated. But really, they could have done better in my humble opinion. I think the best candidate Japan sent for the Ms. Universe pageant will always be Ms. Kurara Chibana – the epitome of smart and beautiful.

This reality TV program is aired in US/Canada since June and it’s extremely hilarious. We all know how extremely out of this world Japanese Game Shows are :P

Now, a bunch of Americans are taken to Japan to participate in this game show without prior knowledge in what they are about to expect.

This story sort of reminds me of a scene in Meet the Parents when Gaylord “Greg” Focker was taken out of his flight for saying bomb, the conversation went like this:

Security: You were acting like a manic and you threatened her with a bomb.
Greg: No, I said I didn’t have a bomb.
Security: But you said bomb.
Greg: I said, “It’s not like I have a bomb”.
Security: You said “Bomb” on an airplane.
Greg: What’s wrong with saying ‘Bomb’ on an airplane?
Security: You can’t say ‘Bomb’ on an airplane!

Man arrested after ‘joking’ with flight attendant he had stick of dynamite on plane in Hokkaido

CHITOSE, Hokkaido — A man has been arrested for telling a cabin attendant that he possessed a stick of dynamite on a plane, causing the flight to be delayed by three hours, police said.

Takanari Deto, 69, a real estate company owner of Chuo-ku, Sapporo, stands accused of forcible obstruction of business.

He admitted to the allegations. “I did it as a joke,” he was quoted as telling investigators during questioning.

The incident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday when the aircraft was parked at New Chitose Airport waiting for departure, local police said.

Deto told a cabin attendant on Hokkaido International Airlines (Air Do) Flight 20 bound for Haneda Airport in Tokyo that he had a stick of dynamite as he was placing a paper bag into an overhead compartment, according to investigators.

All of the 214 passengers and crewmembers were evacuated and police officers searched the cabin but found no explosive.

The flight departed for Tokyo three hours behind schedule.

This year’s contender for Japan: Hiroko Mima

It seems appropriate that this year’s Miss Universe Japan, Hiroko Mima, excels at the high jump. She is, in fact, aiming for the highest bar of all in Vietnam on July 14 when she represents her country in the Miss Universe final, following in the footsteps of Riyo Mori, who won last year, and Kurara Chibana, who was first runner-up in 2006.

Born in Tokushima, the 173cm-tall Mima, 22, says she always wanted to be a physical education instructor, and has competed nationally in the high jump. “I never saw many beauty contests on TV when I was growing up. They didn’t really have a positive image then. I knew of Miss Japan, but didn’t know Miss Universe at all. Then I saw the news about Kurara, and last year, when Riyo won, I discovered we were the same age. I thought if she could do it, so could I.”

Mima’s determined spirit has not only propelled her onto the world stage, it has helped her through some difficult times. In junior high school, she had a serious spinal illness. Then her grandmother died in 2003 and her father three years ago. “I loved them so much, and I was very sad. [But] when my dad passed away, I didn’t confine myself to my room crying. My family and I all supported each other by talking about how enjoyable life was with him. Everybody remembers him in a positive way. I think he is looking over us from heaven. These tragedies made me realize we only get one life, and I am determined to take on many different challenges.”
